Staff Profiles
Director, Carlos Fernandez
Carlos A. Fernandez-Gonzalez assumed his duties as director for the Center for Latino Arts and Culture on September 1, 2005. Fernandez holds a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, where he specialized in ethnomusicology. Originally from Costa Rica, he is also a musician performing vocal and instrumental music from the Latin American renaissance and contemporary folk and popular music. His scholarly research has focused on popular religious practice and traditional music of Central America and the Caribbean and includes several articles and a book.
Associate Director, Sandra Rocio Castro
Rocio graduated from Douglass College and was former director of Rutgers' Continuing Education Center. She emigrated to the United States in 1972 from Colombia, South America. She has a diverse background. She is of Guatemalen and Mexican descent and was raised in Hawaii. As a student at Rutgers Ms. Castro founded Epsilon Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha, a Latin Sorority. She now advises 4 Latino student organizations and is the Founder of the After School Tutoring/Mentoring Program.
Program Coordinator, Silismar Suriel
Silismar graduated from Rutgers University in May 2003 with majors in Political Science and Puerto Rican and Hispanic Caribbean Studies. As an undergraduate she was involved in organizations like the Latino Student Council, the Latin American Womyn's Organization, and the Pa'Lante People's School of English. Silismar advises the Latino Student Council, Omega Phibeta Sorority Inc., LLEGO, LAWO, and Sociedad Estudiantil Dominicana.
Secretary, Carla Ortiz
Carla went to Penn State part-time from 1994 till 1998 and holds an associate degree in Liberal Arts. She was involved in Minority Student Union at Penn State. She began working at the Rutgers University - Mathematics Department in 1999 in the Undergraduate Office, then was promoted to the Graduate Office in 2003. She began as the secretary for the Center for Latino Arts and Culture on December 19, 2005.

Isabel Nazario, Founding Director of the Center for Latino Arts and Culture has been appointed as the Associate Vice President for Academics and Public Partnerships in the Arts and Humanities.

Miguel Algarín is cofounder of the Nuyorican Poets Café, Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University and author of more than ten books of poetry, anthologies, and numerous works for television and theater. His new memoir, Survival/Supervivencia (2009), spans his work over the last thirty-five years.

Hemingay’s Cuban Son

New Jersey visual artist Raul Villarreal presents a new memoir co-written with his father, Rene Villarreal. In 1939, the great American writer Ernest Hemingway moved into the Finca Vigia, an estate outside of Havana. In 1946 he hired Rene Villarreal—then only 17—as his household manager. Over the next 15 years, Villarreal became a witness to Hemingway's escapades and adventures as well as the writer's work habits, moods, passions and friendships.
